  • Badgers have sung "Varsity" for more than a century. The song was adapted from a Latin hymn entitled "Domine Salvam Fac," written by French composer Charles Gounod. Henry Dyke Sleeper, a young instructor in the College of Letters and Science's School of Music, published a new version of the hymn he called "Varsity Toast" in 1898. Former Wisconsin Band Director Ray Dvorak introduced the now-famous arm swinging in 1934, making any performance of "Varsity" a sight to behold. Many UW graduates fondly remember these lyrics:

  • "On Wisconsin" is not only the University "fight song," but it has also been designated as the official State Song of Wisconsin. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular school songs in the country and has been adopted by thousands of high school bands as their own. It is rare to attend a high school football game anywhere in the U.S. and not hear "On Wisconsin" being performed by at least one of the school bands. The melody of this famous song was composed in 1909 by W.T. Purdy, a corporation clerk who prior to that time had never set foot in Wisconsin. The words were supplied by Carl Beck, a former University of Wisconsin student. These two young men in one day produced the song that John Philip Sousa called "the finest of college marching songs." Traditions such as this make Wisconsin a personal university to faculty, students, and alumni everywhere.

  • “Varsity” has been around a long time. UW professor Henry Dyke Sleeper wrote the lyrics (titled “Varsity Toast”) in 1898, and the melody is even older, having been penned (for the hymn “Domine Salvum Fac”) by French composer Charles Gounod in 1855. UW band director Ray Dvorak added the arm wave in 1934, by which time the Badger yearbook was describing the song as “traditional.” But when did people start using the phrase time-honored 'Varsity' as though that were the song’s actual title? That’s harder to pin down. According to current band announcer John Biester ’78, the phrase time-honored ‘Varsity’ was used before he assumed that job in 1995. He thinks it was written by Mike Leckrone, who scripts what the announcer says. The phrase’s popularity appears to have been the doing of Jack Rane, Biester’s predecessor from 1971 to 1994. Rane was known colloquially as “the voice of the band,” and “Varsity” was important to him — he died in December 1994, and when the band played a memorial for him in September 1995, it featured the dirge-like tune.
